Beyond 2010: The Tourism Legacies of the Vancouver Olympic Winter Games

As we prepare to welcome the world in 2010, Vancouver will once again be on the global stage – almost 25 years after hosting the world at Expo ’86.

And although we’re less than a year away from hosting the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, the vision to host the Winter Games is actually decades old. In fact, Whistler submitted two previous bids to host the Olympics. But it was in 1997 that Tourism Vancouver, Tourism Whistler and Sport BC joined together, formally launching the winning bid quest. Six years later, in 2003, Vancouver was named the Host City for the 2010 Winter Games.

City of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan

An exciting City

Moose Jaw is poised to have an exciting few years with several major developments scheduled to take place. The City of Moose Jaw is a major player in this development as we seek to replace our aging rink with a new multi-purpose spectator arena, an eight sheet curling rink, and an indoor soccer facility. This project is worth 61 million dollars and is financed by the City of Moose Jaw, the Province of Saskatchewan and the Federal government. In addition, the community has been undertaking 10 millions of dollars of fund raising; quite a feat for a city of 34,500. Our new arena is to be built in a downtown location in keeping with our downtown revitalization strategy.

Downtown is also the location for our new River Street development. Envisioned by a private developer, this project includes a 1920’s theme hotel and retail stores built along historic River Street, capturing the past glory of the area. It is seen as a pedestrian friendly venue and will serve as an anchor in that area adjacent to the new arena.

City of Brampton, Ontario

Revitalization, Reinvestment, Reimagining City

Revitalization, reinvestment, reimagining…these words are being used often in reference to the City of Brampton. A city approaching half a million residents, Brampton remains one of the fastest growing cities in the country, and one of the best kept secrets in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). Brampton Mayor Susan Fennell’s passion and enthusiasm for the City is infectious. She, along with an active and dedicated City Council, work tirelessly to ensure residents feel safe and proud to live in the community. No wonder the City was recognized as an International Safe City in 2007 by the World Health Organization.

Downtown Brampton, the historic centre and heart of the city, is a unique part of the community. A commercial hub of the city since 1853, the downtown combines historic and contemporary homes with commerce, arts, culture, entertainment, recreation and dining, in a pedestrian environment.

News1130 is Vancouver's only official radio station of the 2010 Winter Olympics. Tune-in to News1130 for all your Olympic news and information for Team Coverage, Breaking News and what's Happening Now as we journey along the road to the winter Olympics. The News1130 reporters will be granted exclusive access to be on-location and in-venue at the 2010 games as well as first-hand interviews with athletes moments after they cross the finish line.

This exciting opportunity is few and far between for News1130 as well as for businesses that would like to be associated with this Olympic experience. Your company’s message will be heard locally on the radio and internationally as we have listeners tuning in from all over the world through our live online streaming available on News1130.com.

Did you know? News1130 listeners are 47 percent more likely than the average Vancouver population to invest in real estate. Also, over 37,900 News1130 listeners own a second recreational property.

In such a competitive real estate market and a changing economy, it becomes more and more difficult for companies to differentiate themselves from so many others. A vast majority uses print and flyers. Not many are using radio to sell themselves in the Lower Mainland. The radio market is relatively untapped. Busy professionals and business people are spending less and less time reading newspapers.

With a well-written radio on-air commercial, you can raise your profile, establish yourself as an expert in the industry and make your name very well-known which will in turn equate to traction and sales.

News1130
leads the market in Lower Mainland listenership, reaching the real estate investor, professional community and higher house hold demographic. We have tremendous credibility in the market place as the only all-news station

Please feel free to contact us at anytime to discuss how an advertising campaign on our "All News" radio station can help tremendously with your business.

Gen X is flexing their new purchasing muscle

Our internal survey of RE/MAX offices across the country have reported that Generation X purchasers are poised to replace aging baby boomers as the major force in recreational property markets across the country.

This demographic shift was originally noted in our 2009 RE/MAX Recreational Property Report highlighting sales, pricing, trends and developments in 50 Canadian markets. Our report found demand from Gen X (those born between 1965 and 1980) has nearly doubled over one year ago. Seventy-four per cent of markets surveyed this year reported a marked trend toward thirty-something buyers snapping up affordably-priced product, ranging from waterfront cottages to resort condominiums, compared to just 40 per cent in 2008.
